چکیده

a r t i c l e i n f o a b s t r a c t We study a novel load balancing problem that arises in web search engines. The problem is a combination of an offline assignment problem, where files need to be (copied and) assigned to machines, and an online load balancing problem, where requests ask for specific files and need to be assigned to a corresponding machine, whose load is increased by this. We present simple deterministic algorithms for this problem and exhibit an interesting trade-off between the available space to make file copies and the obtainable makespan. We also give non-trivial lower bounds for a large class of deterministic algorithms and present a randomized algorithm that beats these bounds with high probability.

Online Distribution and Load Balancing Optimization Using the Robin Hood and Johnson Hybrid Algorithm

Proper planning of assembly lines is one of the production managers’ concerns at the tactical level so that it would be possible to use the machine capacity, reduce operating costs and deliver customer orders on time. The lack of an efficient method in balancing assembly line can create threatening problems for manufacturing organizations. The use of assembly line balancing methods cannot balan...

File Assignment in Parallel I/O Systems with Minimal Variance of Service Time

ÐWe address the problem of assigning nonpartitioned files in a parallel I/O system where the file accesses exhibit Poisson arrival rates and fixed service times. We present two new file assignment algorithms based on open queuing networks which aim at minimizing simultaneously the load balance across all disks, as well as the variance of the service time at each disk. We first present an off-li...

A Survey: Load Balancing for Distributed File System

Distributed Systems are useful for computation and storage of large scale data at dispersed location. Distributed File System (DFS) is a subsystem of Distributed System. DFS is a means of sharing of storage space and data. Servers, Storage devices and Clients are on dispersed location in DFS. Fault tolerance and Scalability are two main features of distributed file system. Performance of DFS is...

Deterministic and Randomized Algorithms for Distributed On-line Task Assignment and Load Balancing without Load Status Information Deterministic and Randomized Algorithms for Distributed On-line Task Assignment and Load Balancing without Load Status Information

{ We nd two interesting thresholds for the number of tasks generated under a new model of on-line task assignment and load balancing environment, in which tasks are assigned without any information on current load status, and load balancing is achieved together with task assignment. It is shown that balanced task assignment can be obtained deterministically when the number of tasks exceeds the ...
